ORU takes series with 3-1 win over ACU

TULSA, Okla. - The Oral Roberts University baseball team kept pace in the Southland Conference Tournament race on Sunday afternoon as the Golden Eagles earned a 3-1 victory over Abilene Christian to take two out of three in the series at J.L. Johnson Stadium.

ORU improved to 29-23 overall and 14-13 in Southland Conference play, the Wildcats dropped to 17-30 and 6-15 against conference opponents.

Following league action on Sunday, the Golden Eagles are locked in a three-way tie with Lamar and Central Arkansas for seventh place with three games remaining. ORU and Lamar will face off in the final conference series of the season next week. The top eight teams in the standings qualify for the tournament.

The top of the ORU lineup had success at the plate against the Wildcats, with Jose Trevino, Emmanuel Forcier and Tyler Boss each finishing with two hits. Trevino hit a two-run home run in the top of the first, his 10th of the season, to put the Golden Eagles up 2-0.

Austen Colt added an RBI single to left field in the second inning, scoring Anthony Sequeira to extend the Golden Eagle lead to 3-0.

Guillermo Trujillo (3-3) got the call to start the game on the mound and went five innings, allowing one run and striking out six for the victory. The trio of Jacob Teague, Kurt Giller and Jordan Romano shut the Wildcats down in the final four innings, only allowing one hit. Romano recorded his 12th save of the season, third most in a season in program history.

Scoring the lone run of the game for the Wildcats on a wild pitch was Brandon Grudzielanek to cut the ORU lead to 3-1 in the top of the fourth. Seth Spivey was the only Wildcat with a multi-hit game, recording two singles.

ACU starting pitcher Ty Walker (0-1) faced just three, but allowed two earned runs, including Trevino's home run.

On Tuesday, the Golden Eagles make the short trip to Stillwater, Okla., to face Oklahoma State in their final non-conference game of the season. First pitch at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
