TULSA, Okla.-Oral Roberts pounded out 11 hits and after trailing
1-0 early, came back to win the series opener against North Dakota
State 5-1, Thursday at J.L. Johnson Stadium.
ORU (31-21, 15-5) used a strong performance on the mound from Drew
Bowen (5-2), who earned the victory going 7.1 innings with five
strikeouts and no walks. For NDSU (37-16, 13-8), it was starter
John Straka who was hit with the loss, giving up all five ORU runs
and 10 of the 11 hits in 6.2 innings of work.
Jose
Trevino provided the majority of the offense for the Golden
Eagles, going 4-for-4 on the night with a run scored and three
RBI. Logan
Domenico and Jared
Schlehuber each had a pair of hits, with Domenico saving the
game on a couple of occasions as he gunned two Bison at the
plate.
Wes Satzinger had a pair of hits for the Bison, who left six
runners on base in loss, scoring a single run on eight hits.
The top of the Bison order did damage early for North Dakota
State, with three of the first four batters of the game reaching
safely with singles into left field. Bowen settled down and retired
the next two batters on fly balls, keeping it a 1-0 game after Zach
Wentz' RBI single scored Tim Colwell.
The Golden Eagles found an answer in the second as they loaded
the bases on a trio of hits, including a double by Schlehuber. He
would score the game-tying run on a sacrifice fly to left
centerfield by Bennett
Pickar.
A two-out single to center in the third gave ORU the 2-1 lead as
Trevino earned the RBI scoring Cam
Schiller from second.
The Bison had a leadoff double in the fourth but a laser throw
from Domenico to Pickar gunned down Wes Satzinger at the plate to
preserve the ORU lead. Domenico would do the same in the top of the
fifth, ending the inning again as he caught Kyle Kleinendorst
trying to score on a single off the bat of Nick Colwell.
Trevino gave Bowen and the Golden Eagles a little breathing room
in the bottom of the sixth as his towering shot floated over the
left field wall for a solo homerun to start the inning, making it
3-1.
Trevino would do it again with an RBI single in the seventh that
went right over second base bag to score Domenico, chasing the
Straka from the game. Schlehuber went right after the new pitcher,
knocking a single into left to score Schiller, giving ORU a 5-1
advantage.
With the additional breathing room, Trevino moved to the mound
to try to close out the game in the ninth. He did so without giving
up a hit, making his first appearance on the mound in an ORU
uniform a successful one.
The two teams will meet in a double-header on Friday beginning
at 2 p.m. from J.L. Johnson Stadium.
