TULSA--Seth
Furmanek tossed a six-hitter and belted a two-run home run to
lead Oral Roberts to a 7-1 victory over No. 30 Wichita State,
Tuesday night at J.L. Johnson Stadium.
Furmanek
(2-0) struck out four batters without a walk in hurling his first
career complete game on 107 pitches. He also knocked in three runs
and scored twice.
Trailing 1-0
after Wichita State's (11-6) Travis Bennett laced an RBI double in
the top of the first, the Golden Eagles (6-10) took advantage of
some wildness by Shockers start Charlie Lowell (2-2) in the bottom
of the inning.
The first
four batters reached against Lowell, with Furmanek driving in the
first run with a bases loaded walk. P.J. Sequeira and Colby Price each
knocked in a run with a ground out and the final run of the inning
scored when Furmanek crossed the plate on a wild pitch as ORU went
ahead, 4-1.
ORU
maintained its lead until adding three runs in the seventh. Joey
Winiecki led off with a single and scored on a double by Nick
Baligod to give ORU a 5-1 lead. Furmanek followed two batters
later with a two-run home run as the Golden Eagles grabbed a 7-1
lead.
Furmanek
never faced a serious threat after the first inning. After allowing
back-to-back hit with one out in the third the senior right-hander
retired 12 of the next 13 batters before a one-out single in the
seventh snapped the streak. But He gave up only a two-out single in
the ninth the rest of the way.
The Golden
Eagles collected only five hits, but took advantage of three walks,
three hit batters and an error. Winiecki led the way with a 2-for-4
effort and two runs scored. Six different players recorded hits for
the Shockers.
The Golden
Eagles and Shockers conclude their two-game set on Wednesday at
3:30 p.m.
