Martinez Named Pro-Line Athletic National Hitter of the Week

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Senior shortstop Juan Martinez earned his second national honor of the week on Tuesday as he was named the Pro-Line Athletic National Hitter of the Week as announced by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA).

Martinez was named the Louisville Slugger Player of the Week by Collegiate Baseball, as well as the Summit League Player of the Week on Monday.

Martinez went 13-of-22 behind the plate for a .591 average, and belted five home runs and 19 RBI in five games while recording two walk-off, game-winning hits. The senior from Bakersfield, Calif., drew six walks and scored eight runs while posting a slugging percentage of 1.273.

Martinez went 4-for-4 at Dallas Baptist with two homers, including a two-run shot in the ninth inning as ORU fell short 5-4. The following day, Martinez belted a two-run shot in the bottom of the tenth inning to give ORU the 9-7 win over UT-Arlington.

On Friday night, Martinez slapped a single through the right side to drive in the winning run in an 8-7 win in the tenth inning over South Dakota State, and went 4-for-6 with eight RBI and two homers, including a grand slam, in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader against the Jackrabbits.

Martinez currently leads the Golden Eagle hitters in average (.346), runs (26), hits (36), RBI (34), total bases (69) and on-base percentage (.448), while tying Seth Furmanek with nine home runs. The nine long balls already tie Martinez' total from last season.

Martinez is currently on an eight-game hitting streak, and has posted 10 multiple-hit games and seven multiple-RBI games.

The Golden Eagles play host to Arkansas-Little Rock at 7:00 p.m. tonight at J.L. Johnson Stadium.
