Garewal's 12th-Inning Blast Propels ORU to 5-3 Victory Over Wichita State

WICHITA, Kan. – Tyler Garewal (Bakersfield, Calif.) blasted a two-out home run over the left-centerfield wall in the top of the 12th inning as the Oral Roberts University baseball team rallied for a 5-3 victory over Wichita State on Friday night at Eck Stadium.

With two outs in the top of the 12th inning and the score tied at 3-3, senior Juan Martinez (Bakersfield, Calif.) singled up the middle before Garewal posted his second long ball of the season to give the Golden Eagles (8-5) the victory.

The ORU pitchers highlighted the night, as Mark Serrano (Downey, Calif.), Spencer Roberts (Littleton, Colo.) and T.J. Kelly (Bakersfield, Calif.) combined for 21 strikeouts, which was a Wichita State all-time record.

Serrano (4-0) started the evening and tossed a gem, scattering seven hits and allowing two earned runs while fanning a career-high 13 Shockers in only 6.0 innings.

Kelly (1-0) picked up the win after only allowing one hit in the final five frames with six strikeouts and only one walk.

Trailing 3-1, the Golden Eagles scored two in the top of the eighth inning to even the game at 3-3. Seth Furmanek (Gilbert, Ariz.) worked a walk after being down 0-2 to lead off, and advanced to third on two consecutive wild pitches. Martinez followed with a two-run slam to right center to knot the contest.

Wichita State (12-10) scored the first run in the home half of the second inning. Chris O'Brien led off with a walk and Will Baez followed with a single. Josh Rosecrans then reached on an error while attempting a sacrifice bunt, which scored O'Brien. Serrano went on to strike out the side in order, and did the same again the following inning.

Serrano led off the fourth inning with two more strikeouts, which made eight consecutive punch outs.

The Shockers pushed the advantage to 2-0 in the fifth after Cody Lassley led off with a solo shot to centerfield. The Golden Eagles cut the lead in half the following inning, as Furmanek and Garewal hit consecutive singles and Michael Notaro (Westlake Village, Calif.) drove in his ninth run of the year with a single to right field.

Wichita State took the 3-1 lead in the sixth inning, after a double and three consecutive infield hits.

Garewal and Martinez both went 2-for-6 with two RBI, while Notaro also had two hits and a RBI.

The Golden Eagles return to action against Missouri State on Friday in Springfield, Mo.
