AUSTIN, TX -- Matt VanDerBosch (Hastings,
Minn.) was 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles, two runs and an RBI
Friday, leading Oral Roberts University to a 6-5 win over TCU in
the first round of the Austin Regional of the NCAA baseball
tournament.
Dennis Bigley (Lancaster,
Texas) pitched six innings, giving up two runs to earn the win for
the Golden Eagles (49-9), who will play the winner of Friday
night's matchup between No. 1 seed Texas (50-13) and Youngstown
State (22-30).
Bigley (13-1) allowed
two first inning runs and nothing more, scattering six hits and
striking out three while walking one.
TCU led 2-0 after the
first but Oral Roberts answered with four runs over the next two
innings. Jeff
Tuttle (Orange, Calif.) hit a solo home run in the second
and VanDerBosch, who led ORU's 15-hit attack, led off the third
with a double and scored on Brian Hanson's
(Kelseyville, Calif.) single.
VanDerBosch was at it
again in the fourth. Trying to steal third, he was nearly caught in
a pickoff play but TCU pitcher Chad Underwood threw the ball into
center field and VanDerBosch made it home to score.
VanDerBosch then plated
Ryan Welborn
(Yukon, Okla.) with a two-out double for a 6-2 lead.
TCU (38-25) rallied for
two runs in the eighth off reliever Adam Lesko (Las Vegas,
Nev.), and nearly tied it in the ninth. Trailing 6-5 with two outs,
the Horned Frogs had runners on first and third before Justin Ramsey (Elk
Grove, Calif.) struck out Chris Neuman with runners on the corners
to end the game, picking up his 13th save in the
process.
Ricky Rivera (Santa
Isabel, P.R.) was 2-for-4 with an RBI triple, and Hanson, Welborn
and Nate
Griffin (Tulsa, Okla.) each had two hits for ORU.
Eugene Espinelli (9-5)
took the loss for TCU, allowing four runs on seven hits over 2.2
innings.
