Box Score
WICHITA, KS€"Josh Lex (Elk Grove,
Calif.) was 4-for-5 with a home run and four RBI in leading No. 24
Oral Roberts University to a 13-9 win at 10th-ranked
Wichita State, Tuesday at Eck Stadium.
In a game which
featured huge offensive innings for each team, the Golden Eagles
(24-6) were victorious thanks in large part to the bullpen duo of
Justin Ramsey
(Elk Grove, Calif.) and Dane Towery (Mustang,
Okla.), who combined to hold the Shockers (16-4) scoreless over the
final four innings.
Trailing 1-0 in the top
of the fourth, the Golden Eagles sent 14 batters to the plate and
scored nine runs for a 9-1 lead. Lex belted a two-run homer for a
2-1 lead, and Boomer
Welles (Beverly Hills, Calif.) and Ryan Welborn (Yukon, Okla.)
followed with one-out RBI singles as ORU went ahead 4-1.
Matt VanDerBosch (Hastings,
Minn.) drove in a run for a 5-1 lead and Grant Plumley (Lake Forest,
Calif.) followed two batters later with a two-run double for a 7-1
advantage. Lex capped the scoring spree with a to-run single.
But the Shcokers had
their own big inning in the fifth. After Drew Moffiitt's solo homer
in the fourth cut the lead to 9-2, Wichita State plated seven runs
an inning later tying the game at 9-9. Joe Muich and Logan Sorensen
each had two-run singles in the inning for the Shockers.
ORU, however, didn't go
away. Plumley led off the sixth with a double, advanced to second
when Dennis
Bigley (Lancaster, Texas) was plunked with one out and
later scored on a sacrifice fly by Ricky Rivera (Santa Isable,
P.R.), after both Bigley and Plumley moved up on a passed ball, as
ORU went up 10-9. Welles then singled home Bigley for an 11-9
lead.
Rivera some insurance
in the eighth with a two-run home run, his fourth of the season,
for a 13-9 lead. Towery set down the Shockers in order in the
ninth.
The Golden Eagles
hammered out 14 hits in the contest. VanDerBosch, Plumley, Welles
and Welborn each had two hits apiece. Nick Blasi paced Wichita
State with a 3-for-6 night.
Ramsey (5-0), who
replaced Matt
Hancock (Okmulgee, Okla.) with the bases loaded and no one
out in the fifth, allowed two runs during the inning but gave up
nothing in the sixth and seventh to get the win. Towery allowed two
hits and one walk with a strikeout in two innings of work.
The Golden Eagles
continue their road trek when they visit No. 23 Arizona State for a
three-game series beginning 9 p.m., Thursday, in Tempe, Ariz.
