TULSA, Oklahoma – In an 8-4 win at South Dakota State, senior outfielder
Makani Tanaka hit two home runs, marking the first multi-home run game by a Golden Eagle since last season.
The Golden Eagles opened the scoring in the first inning as
Cooper Kelly launched a home run over the right-field wall, driving in
Wailele Kane-Yates, who reached on an error, and
Martell Davis, who singled.
ORU added two more runs in the second inning.
Keaton Campbell led off with a single, followed by
Hudson Ellis, who was hit by a pitch. Both runners were driven in on a double by
Will Edmunson.
Owen Coil added a sacrifice fly in the third, scoring Davis, who had singled and advanced to third on a
Cooper Combs double.
The Jackrabbits scored a pair of runs in both the third and fourth innings, first on a two-RBI single and then on a two-run home run.
Tanaka hit his first home run of the day in the fourth inning, sending it deep to right field.
The final runs of the day came when Tanaka hit his second home run, sealing the 8-4 ORU victory to open the series.
Golden Eagles starter
Easton Teel (4-1) earned the win, tossing 5.0 innings.
Maddox Thornton entered in the sixth and closed out the game, earning his third save of the season with 4.0 shutout innings while striking out three batters.
SDSU starter Sam Schlecht (3-3) was charged with the loss after 5.0 innings, allowing seven runs, four earned, on nine hits.
