STILLWATER, Okla. – Behind a season-high six RBI from Jonah Cox, the Oral Roberts baseball team completed the third largest come-from-behind victory in NCAA Tournament history, rallying from an eight-run deficit to defeat Washington, 15-12, Saturday night from O'Brate Stadium in the Stillwater Regional. With the win, the Golden Eagles are headed to their first regional final since 2011, which is set for Sunday at 8 p.m.
ORU extended the nation's longest active win streak to 20 games, setting a new program record in the NCAA Division I era. In their last 41 contests, the Golden Eagles are 38-3.
Cox stretched his hit streak to 43 games, the sixth-longest in NCAA history, after going 3-for-5 and became the program's all-time record holder for hits in a season (105). The multi-hit performance marked the 31st of the year for the junior, who has now hit safely in 58 of the 59 games this season.
Offensively, the Golden Eagles registered a season-best 24 hits as eight different ORU players logged a multi-hit performance. Holden Breeze, Jacob Godman and Jake McMurray joined Cox with multi-RBI performances in the victory.
On the mound, Evan Kowalski earned the win after tossing 4.1 innings in relief and striking out six. The appearance marked the first for the senior since May 19. Dalton Patten registered two strikeouts in 1.1 innings of work and closer Cade Denton logged his 14th save of the year with a perfect ninth.
After Washington raced out to an 8-0 lead through two innings, the Golden Eagle offense went to work in the third. Jacob Godman led off the frame with his fifth home run of the season to put ORU on the board. Following back-to-back singles from McMurray and Quinn, Cox trimmed the deficit to four, 8-4, with a three-run blast off the scoreboard.Â
The long ball marked the 10th of the season for the Collegiate Baseball First Team All-American.Â
After Kowalski sat the Huskies down in order in the bottom half of the third, the Golden Eagle offense continued to chip away in the fourth. Godman plated the first run of the frame on an RBI double and later came around to score on a McMurray RBI single as ORU cut the deficit to 8-6. Cox pulled ORU to within one, 8-7, with a sacrifice fly to center.
Following another scoreless frame from Kowalski, the Golden Eagles claimed the lead, 9-8, in the fifth behind a two-run blast off the bat of Holden Breeze. The homer marked the sixth of the year for the redshirt junior and his first since April 15.Â
ORU added to the lead later in the inning as a McMurray double coupled with a Huskies error pushed across two more runs. McMurray scored the fifth run of the frame on an RBI single from Cox as the Golden Eagles led 12-8.
Washington answered in the sixth with a pair of solo homers to draw within two, 12-10.Â
Cox got a run back for ORU in the seventh as the junior plated Blaze Brothers, who reached on a leadoff single, to make it 13-10.
A pair of two-out RBI singles in the bottom half of the frame pulled the Huskies to within one, 13-12. Washington continued to threaten as the tying run reached second but a Patten strikeout ended the frame.
The Golden Eagles got insurance in the eighth as Drew Stahl led off the inning with a solo homer to left. For Stahl, the long ball was his 11th of the year. Later in the frame, Quinn pushed across ORU's 15th run of the night with an infield single.Â
In the ninth, Denton slammed the door shut with a one-two-three frame to complete the come-from-behind victory.
