MACOMB, Ill. – The No. 12 Oral Roberts baseball team concluded its 2023 regular season with a 12-0 run-rule victory over Western Illinois in eight innings Saturday afternoon from Alfred D. Boyer Stadium. The series sweep marked the fourth straight for ORU and ninth of the year.
The Golden Eagles, who finished Summit League play with only one loss for the sixth time in program history, have won 15 games in a row, which marks the longest active streak in Division I. In its last 36 games, ORU is 33-3.Â
Brooks Fowler earned the win to improve to 8-1 on the year after tossing five shutout frames to go along with two strikeouts. Over his last three starts, the sophomore has not yielded an earned run. In relief, Caleb Isaacs, Jacob Widener, Andrew Roach and Cade Denton each registered scoreless appearances to complete the Golden Eagles' fifth shutout of the season.
Jacob Godman led the offensive charge for ORU as the senior went 2-for-3 with two runs and a game-best three RBI. Holden Breeze, Blaze Brothers, Jake McMurray and Justin Quinn joined Godman with multi-hit performances.
Center fielder Jonah Cox, who robbed a homer in the second, extended his hit streak to 38 games in the win and finished the regular season with a hit in 53 of the 54 contests. Â
The Golden Eagles jumped on top, 2-0, in the second behind a Breeze sacrifice fly and a Godman RBI double down the left-field line.Â
In the fourth, ORU plated six runs as its lead bloomed to 8-0. A bases-loaded RBI walk from Drew Stahl plated the first run of the inning and Godman followed with a two-run single as the Golden Eagles led 5-0. After McMurray pushed the advantage to 6-0 with a sac fly, Quinn dropped an RBI single into right to make it 7-0.Â
An RBI groundout from Cox allowed Blaze Brothers, who reached on a bunt single, to score the final run of the frame.Â
ORU struck for four more runs in the eighth to make the final 12-0. In the frame, McMurray, Quinn and Cox all registered an RBI.Â
