TULSA, Okla. – The Oral Roberts men's basketball team came up short in Thursday night's overtime game, 106-102, to South Dakota State at the Mabee Center.
As two of the nation's top offensive teams squared off in the Mabee Center Thursday, Oral Roberts and South Dakota State combined for 208 points. The Golden Eagles had four scored in double-digits as
Max Abmas led ORU with 34 points. Abmas played all 45 minutes and went 6-for-11 from the three-point line. Carlos Jurgens scored a career high 25 going 10-for-15 overall.
Issac McBride had 18 and
Elijah Lufile scored 13 with 16 rebounds, a career high, for his fourth double-double of the season.
ORU started the game hot as Abmas hit three consecutive three-point jumpers to start. Throughout the half, the Golden Eagles never trailed, but SDSU was able to tie the game twice. ORU led by as much as 13 in the first half at the 6:11 mark. The team shot 54.1 percent from the field and held the nation's No. 2 offense to 44.7 percent. ORU managed 50 points in the opening 20 minutes.
The Golden Eagles scored the opening bucket in the second half to lead by 11 before South Dakota State went on a 12-0 run to take its first lead of the game with 16:52 to play. ORU answered with a three-pointer by
Kareem Thompson that turned the offense up as the team went back up by nine, three minutes later. With 6:13 left in the second, SDSU led by five before back-to-back three-point shots by Jurgens and McBride gave ORU the lead back. The Golden Eagles led by four with 56 seconds to play, but free-throws down the stretch pulled South Dakota State to tie, 88-88, at the end of regulation.
South Dakota State led by seven with 2:28 to go in overtime before consecutive triples hit by Abmas and Jurgens brought ORU to within one with 1:35 left. The Jacks managed to lead by four with six second left before Abmas hit a three to bring the team to with one with 3 seconds remaining. SDSU's Douglas Wilson caught the ball on a breakaway to score the and-one bucket to take a 106-102 win.
Luke Appel scored 41 points for South Dakota State to lead all scorers. Wilson secured 29 and Baylor Scheierman had 26. The trip combined for 96 of the Jackrabbits 106 total points as SDSU had 68 points in the paint. Overall, SDSU shot 52.6 percent from the field in the Mabee Center.
Turning Point
Down the stretch, South Dakota State hit key free-throws to lift the team up by four with six second remaining in the overtime period.
Individual Leaders
Oral Roberts: Abmas led the Golden Eagles with 34 points and Lufile had a career high 16 rebounds.
South Dakota State: Appel had 41 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double.
