Blake Hall got to play the hero for the Oral Roberts baseball team on Friday with a walk-off single in the second game of a doubleheader against conference foe Western Illinois.
Jake McMurray and
Joshua Cox combined for eight of the Golden Eagles 12 hits in the first game, both recording four-hit games.
Western Illinois jumped out to a 4-0 lead over the Golden Eagles in the third inning before ORU began chipping away at the deficit. ORU got a run back in the bottom half of the frame when
Ryan Cash plated
Anthony Martinez with a sacrifice fly.
ORU put another run on the board in the fifth when McMurray scored Cox on a double. The Leathernecks extended their lead in the eighth and pushed their lead back to three.
In the final two innings, ORU continued their comeback attempt by scoring a run in each frame. With two outs in the eighth,
Jordan Wiley ripped a pinch-hit double to center field, scoring
Hunter Swift from first. In the ninth,
Caleb Denny scored a run on a fielder's choice to bring ORU back within a run before a pair of strikeouts ended the last-chance effort.
In the second game,
Isaac Coffey twirled his second consecutive complete game – his fourth complete game in five starts. With the seven-inning victory, Coffey moves to 7-1 on the season.
Wiley got the Golden Eagles going with an RBI double to score Hall and Cox.
Western Illinois tied the game in the fourth inning with a pair of RBI singles.
In the sixth inning, McMurray was inches away from a grand slam that would have broke the scoring open to give ORU a four run lead. Instead, the Western Illinois left fielder made a spectacular play to end the inning and leave the bases full of Golden Eagles.
The seventh inning open with Denny ripping a double down the right field line to open a scoring opportunity. Denny advanced to third on a wild pitch and
Blake Hall ended the game with a single to left on the following pitch.
