Both teams earned a spot in the semifinals after dramatic
last-minute finishes in the quarterfinals. For ORU, it was a made
free throw and a block with less than a second left that sealed the
victory, for WIU it was a rare four-point play in the final minute
taking them from a 51-50 deficit to a 54-51 lead that they were
able finish off at the free throw line. During the regular season,
ORU won both meetings, taking the first meeting 71-70 in double
overtime in Macomb. The Golden Eagles were able to pull away late
in the second meeting, winning 61-51 inside the Mabee Center. ORU
holds a 27-6 advantage all time over WIU, having won four straight
meetings. The last time the two teams met in the tournament was a
60-53 ORU victory in 2006.
Western Illinois started out the season as one of the league's
hottest teams, jumping out to a 9-5 record overall and 4-2 in the
Summit League with victories over North Dakota State and on the
road at Oakland. The double overtime loss to ORU sent them on a
three-game losing skid, as did a double overtime loss to Oakland on
February 4. They earned the regular season sweep of North Dakota
State to earn the #4 seed in the tournament, and finished off the
three-game sweep of the bison in the first round of the tournament.
A low-scoring offense that averages 62 points per game, the
Leathernecks are led by Ceola Clark's 13.7 and Obi Emegano's 13.5
points per game.
