Golden Eagles Breeze Past IUPUI; Stay Perfect in Conference Play

TULSA - Led by Jackie Oliveira and Thais Parada, the ORU volleyball team (9-7, 4-0 Summit League) picked up their fourth-straight conference win by defeating the IUPUI Jaguars (9-10, 2-4 Summit League) in three games, 30-22, 30-25, 30-22.

Oliveira posted a team-high 15 kills for the Golden Eagles, while also dishing out eight digs and three blocks. Junior Thais Parada continues to be a strength for ORU, tallying a season-high 47 assists and eight digs in the sweep.

Junior Janete Ferreira finished the match with 12 kills and seven digs, while junior JoJo Souza and freshman Jocelyn Swier each chipped in 10 kills, a new career-high for Swier.

IUPUI's Hillary Houston finished the match with a team-high 11 kills and 10 digs for the Jags, while Danielle Goodnight chipped in 31 assists.

The Golden Eagles held IUPUI to a .079 hitting percentage in game one as ORU jumped out to an early 5-3 lead. An ORU error and a Danielle Goodnight kill would tie the match at 5-5. Both teams would trade points until a Jocelyn Swier and Jackie Oliveira block would give ORU the 10-9 lead, which they would hold the remainder of the game, winning 30-22.

ORU zipped out to a 4-1 lead in game two before IUPUI could find a way to stop the Golden Eagles. The Jags would score five-straight points to tie the match at 8-8 and eventually take the lead after an ORU attack error, 9-10. Back-and-forth the teams would trade points until IUPUI's Ashley Johnson and Hillary Houston would each lay down a kill to give the Jags a two-point lead, 16-18. Janete Ferreira would tie the game at 19-19 and ORU would take the lead after Swier/Ferreira block and wouldn't look back, going into the locker room with a two-game lead, 30-25.

The Jaguars came out ready to play in game three, taking a 8-4 lead with the help of five ORU errors. The Golden Eagles would claw their way back, tying the game at 9-9 with a Janete Ferreira kill. ORU took the lead at 16-15 with a JoJo Souza/Thais Parada block and would tie the game at 16-16 after an IUPUI block, but that would be the final tie of the game as ORU would run away with the game, winning the game point with a Souza solo block, 30-22.

The Golden Eagles will have a five-day break before traveling to Macomb, Ill., on Friday, Oct. 5 to take on Western Illinois in their first conference road match. Saturday will find ORU in Kansas City as they play the UMKC Kangaroos.
