ORU Falls to IUPUI in Five-Game Loss

INDIANAPOLIS - Jackie Oliveira's match-high 21 kills was not enough for the Golden Eagles (12-10, 7-2 Summit League) as the Oral Roberts volleyball team fell to the IUPUI Jaguars (10-13, 3-6 Summit League) in a hard-fought five game match. ORU fell by scores of 23-30, 30-23, 30-21, 21-30, 13-15.

Oliveira tacked on 13 digs and five blocks for the Golden Eagles, while junior Nicole Weis was outstanding defensively with a career-high 25 digs. Freshman Jocelyn Swier was tough at the net for ORU with six blocks and seven kills and junior Janete Ferreira posted her 11th double-double of the season with 16 kills and 15 digs. Sophomore Juliane Vieira found her way back into the starting lineup and tallied 45 assists for the Golden Eagles.

IUPUI would score first in game one with a Carol Newell kill, but junior JoJo Souza would come right back to tie the game at 1-1 with a kill of her own. That would be as close as ORU would get to the Jags as IUPUI would go on a five-point run to take the 9-4 lead, which they would hold the remainder of the game to win 30-23.

The Jaguars would come out hot in game two, taking a commanding 6-1 lead before ORU would get a spark and tie the game at 9-9 only to follow that with two more points with the help of a Janete Ferreira kill, forcing IUPUI to take a timeout at the 11-9 mark. ORU would lose the lead only once before running away from the home team to win game two 30-23.

Both teams would battle back and forth in game three, tying three times before ORU would go on their own five-point scoring run to lead 11-6. IUPUI would only get as close as four points to ORU before the Golden Eagles went on another scoring streak, taking six-straight points to move on and take game three, 30-21.

Game four started out very similar to game three with the Jags and Golden Eagles swapping points until ORU would score three-straight off of a Jocelyn Swier kill and a Janete Ferreira ace to take a 13-10 lead. IUPUI would come back to take the 16-15 lead with a Danielle Goodnight, Ashley Johnson block and would keep the lead to win game four 30-21.

ORU kept game five close until IUPUI scored six-straight points to pull away from the Golden Eagles. ORU would battle until the very end, but the Jags proved to be too much, winning game five 15-13 and taking the match.

The Golden Eagles will have one day to recuperate before their Sunday match with Centenary in Shreveport, La. The match is set to start at 2 p.m.
