Location:Â South Field (St. Paul, Minnesota)
ST. PAUL, MN. –
Samantha Guzman's third goal of Summit League play helped the Oral Roberts women's soccer team defeat St. Thomas, 1-0, Sunday afternoon in Minnesota.
Â
The Golden Eagles opened the match facing an aggressive Tommies squad. St. Thomas registered two shots in the first 12 minutes looking to make a statement. In the 17
th minute, however, ORU made a statement of its own.
Jordan Grigsby executed a perfect throw-in on the Tommies side of the field that found
Julia Thasaphong posted up on her defender. Thasaphong spun to her left and lofted a right-to-left cross that found
Samantha Guzman on the backside who headed the pass into the back of the net. UST fought back and continued taking shots towards the ORU goal but could not generate quality looks against the Golden Eagle defense. St. Thomas outshot the Golden Eagles 7-3 in the first half, but ORU held a 1-0 lead into the break.
Â
After halftime, the Golden Eagles looked the flip the script with shots on offense. ORU outshot the Tommies 11-8 in the second half and dominated on both sides of the ball. In the 63
rd minute, goalkeeper
Alexa Riefer made a spectacular save punching away a high shot by UST's Melina Knowles. On offense,
Lela Stark and
Marlee Fray provided a spark off the bench and created several great looks at the goal for the Golden Eagle offense. ORU would hold onto its 1-0 lead for the remainder of the half and picked up its first Summit League win of the season.
