TULSA, Okla. – The Oral Roberts women's basketball team moved to 11-0 at home after defeating St. Thomas, 80-73, behind a strong bench performance Thursday night.
Five Golden Eagles reached double-figure scoring on the night led by
Jalei Oglesby's 17 points.
Gentry Baldwin (13),
Hannah Cooper (13),
Taleyah Jones (12), and
Ruthie Udoumoh (12) rounded out the players in double-digits.
St. Thomas jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead early in the first quarter after connecting on its first two field goal attempts. Jones and Udoumoh converted on layups on back-to-back possessions to even it up. Both teams were knotted 8-8 at the media timeout. ORU took its first lead of the game with 1:30 left in the quarter after a midrange basket by Cooper. Amber Scalia immediately answered with a three for the Tommies as St. Thomas led 17-15 at the end of the quarter.
The Golden Eagles went to work in the following quarter outscoring the Tommies 22-10 in the second. Baldwin scored the first five points of the quarter after making a layup hitting a three on consecutive possessions. The freshman knocked down another three less than two minutes later as she scored ORU's first eight points of the quarter. Baldwin finished with 10 points in the second period alone as her scoring burst helped ORU command a 37-27 lead at the half.
Taleyah Jones got into a rhythm to begin the third as she scored a layup and hit two free-throws for ORU's first four points of the second half.
Jalei Oglesby scored eight of her 17 points in the final 5:33 of the third quarter. Oglesby made 4-of-6 field goals in the third as she propelled her team to a 57-45 lead after 30 minutes of play.
Oglesby maintained her blistering scoring pace in the fourth quarter as well, as she registered another eight points in the final period of play. Her lethal touch from the midrange disabled St. Thomas' attempt at going to a zone defense in hopes of stumping the Golden Eagles. St. Thomas mounted a furious comeback before falling short. The Tommies scored 28 points in the quarter, but the Golden Eagles held onto their lead and executed on free throws and possessions down the stretch as they came away with the 80-73 win.
