TULSA, Okla. – Late game long balls led the way for the Oral Roberts women's basketball team as they came from behind to beat Omaha 64-55 at the Mabee Center on Thursday night.
Delaney Nix and
Ariel Walker combined for eight of the nine three pointers that ORU connected on.
The Golden Eagles went up by four in the early going of the first quarter after a 6-0 run by
Katie Scott and
Tirzah Moore got ORU going offensively. Omaha immediately responded with an 8-0 run of their own to take a 15-9 lead. The Golden Eagles closed the gap with four straight points to close the quarter, trailing by two at the end of the first quarter.
Nena Taylor provided a spark off the bench for the Golden Eagles in the second quarter, knocking down a pair of shots for a quick five points. Nix knocked down a three pointer from the logo to put the Golden Eagles up four with 4:54 left to play in the half. As the second quarter came to a close,
Tirzah Moore beat the buzzer with a reverse layup and cut the deficit to just one, 26-25.
After the break, Omaha quickly went up by five before buckets from Nix and Walker swung the momentum and gave ORU a one-point lead at the 5:45 mark. The two teams continued to trade blows with neither side going up by two for the majority of the quarter. As the frame drew to a close, Omaha knocked down a pair of free throws and converted on a layup to take a four point lead into the fourth quarter.
As was the case when ORU and Omaha met in Nebraska, the fourth quarter was all Golden Eagles. Back-to-back three pointers from Walker gave ORU a 47-46 lead and shifted the energy to the Golden Eagles sideline. Trailing 50-49, Nix took matters into her own hands and knocked down a pair of triples, giving ORU a five-point advantage. After that, the Golden Eagles never looked back and the Nix three's sparked an 11-0 run.
THE LEADERS
Oral Roberts: Hot hands from
Delaney Nix and
Ariel Walker paced the way for the Golden Eagles. The duo combined for eight triples, including an ORU career-high five from Nix.
Katie Scott pulled down eight rebounds and dished out four assists to lead the Golden Eagles in both categories.
Omaha: Katie Keitges was the lone Maverick to score in double-figures, tallying 10 points. Josie Filer snagged eight rebounds while Sophie Johnston spread out three assists to lead the Omaha efforts.
