TULSA, Okla. – The cross-town rivalry was renewed Monday night as Oral Roberts men's basketball took down Tulsa, 87-80, behind
Max Abmas' 38 points at the Mabee Center.
DeShang Weaver delivered the decisive blow with 38 seconds remaining as he swatted away a TU layup and Abmas made all eight of his free throws in the final minute bringing the Mayor's Cup back to 81st and Lewis for the first time since 2015.
The offense came out on fire for the Golden Eagles as they combined to knock down five triples in the game's opening five minutes and used a 13-3 burst to jump in front, 19-7. Abmas and Weaver both scored five points during the run spanning 3:43. Carlos Jurgens caught the scoring bug as the redshirt junior tallied five straight and ORU stretched the advantage to 30-17 getting 3-pointers from six different players 10 minutes into the contest.
Jurgens added a pair of free throws and the Golden Eagles lead swelled to 35-20, but the visitors were able to fight back late in the frame. TU capitalized on an 8-0 run to make it a three-point game, 43-40, until Weaver ended the rally by converting at the rim following an offensive rebound with 21 seconds in the half giving ORU a five-point cushion at intermission.
Early in the second half, ORU got two, much-needed triples from
Trey Phipps to erase a one-point deficit as the Golden Hurricane briefly moved in front, 47-46. The sophomore scored seven of the home side's eight points in the half to maintain the lead, 53-52. After the margin went back and forth, Abmas drained 3-pointers on consecutive possessions igniting the crowd for a 59-56 ORU advantage.
It was a 9-3 run for the Golden Eagles over a span of 3:13 as Abmas tallied seven points in the rally, including three free throws after being fouled beyond the arc, for a 71-66 edge. TU pushed back posting a 9-2 burst to take a 75-73 lead as the clock wound down to 2:46. A Weaver 3-pointer followed by another long ball from
Francis Lacis gave ORU a four-point margin, 79-75, and Abmas did not miss at the charity stripe hitting eight in the final 47 seconds to secure the rivalry victory.

Back-to-back triples from Weaver and Lacis helped ORU turn aside a two-point deficit down the stretch and the defense held firm shutting down the Golden Hurricane to the finish.
