Sir Issac Herron's first collegiate double-double and 22 points from
Trey Phipps, the Oral Roberts men's basketball team picked up an 89-46 victory over Haskell Indian Nations University Thursday night inside the Mabee Center.
The Golden Eagles hit each of their first four shots from the field, including triples from
Jamie Bergens and
DeShang Weaver to jump out to an early 10-3 lead. After Haskell knocked down a 3-pointer, it was all ORU as it held the visitors scoreless for more than five minutes during a 7-0 run.
Phipps converted at the rim following a mid-court steal pushing the advantage to 24-10, but the Fightin' Indians closed the gap to six with five minutes remaining in the half. The Golden Eagles were able to hold a 34-26 lead at the halftime break.
The first four points of the second stanza went to Haskell cutting the margin to four before ORU found its rhythm and built a commanding, 47-32 advantage as Weaver drained consecutive shots from distance.
The final 10 minutes of the contest belonged to the Golden Eagles as they used a 12-0 burst covering 3:15 to jump in front, 67-41, highlighted on a pair of dunks from
Nate Clover III. The scoring continued and the lead swelled as high as 45 points with ORU pushing to the finish behind a 34-5 run to secure the 89-46 win.
Turning Point
After Haskell posted four-straight points to begin the second half, the Golden Eagles took control using a 13-2 run during a span of nearly five minutes to stretch their lead to 15 points.
Individual Leaders
Oral Roberts: Herron posted his first career double-double, tallying 12 points and 10 rebounds, including seven offensive boards, and added two steals. It was the first start of his Golden Eagles tenure.
Haskell: Aspen LaPointe led the way for the Fightin' Indians, posting 13 points and pulled down six rebounds.
Inside the Box Score
- Phipps led all scorers in the contest with 22 points, connecting on a game-high five 3-pointers.

Carlos Jürgens pulled down a career-best 11 rebounds and Clover III finished with eight rebounds in less than 11 minutes on the court to go with 11 points. In 7:24 of action,
Elijah Lufile also pulled down eight rebounds, six of which came on the offensive glass.
- Bergens dished out a game-high five assists as the Golden Eagles totaled 14 for the night.
News and Notes
- Ten different players scored for ORU in the contest, including the first four collegiate points for Matthew Henton.
- ORU won the battle on the boards 62-26. The Golden Eagles pulled down 29 offensive rebounds on Thursday evening.
- The Golden Eagles forced 24 turnovers, getting a team-high three steals from Jürgens.
