BROOKINGS, S.D. – The Oral Roberts women's basketball team dropped its Summit League opener, 58-44, at South Dakota State Thursday evening in Brookings, South Dakota.
The Golden Eagles came out strong in the first quarter going 4-for-4 from three-point range. Rylie Torrey led the team going 2-for-2 from deep. ORU led the first period by as much as six points and ended the first 10 minutes with an 18-14 advantage. Both ORU and South Dakota State shot 50 percent from the field in the first.
ORU went up by as much as seven in the second quarter. Keni Jo Lippe hit her first three-point bucket of the game at the buzzer to put the Golden Eagles up by seven going in to the half. Lippe led the team in the first half with nine points. ORU shot 43 percent from the field despite going on a four minute scoring drought. The Golden Eagles' defense held SDSU to 10 points in the second.
South Dakota State came out in the third and cut the deficit to three to start before ORU got on the board. The Jacks eventually tied the game with 6:52 to play in the third. SDSU went up by as much as 11 in the third. The Golden Eagles went on a five minute scoring drought as SDSU went on a 13-1 run. The Jacks went on an 18-point swing in the third to go up 46-35.
SDSU extended its lead in the fourth and went up by 16 with 2:42 to play. Another scoring drought for ORU was broken when Torrey hit her third three of the game to put ORU within 13. South Dakota State went back up by 14 to close out the game, 58-44.
THE LEADERS
Oral Roberts: Keni Jo Lippe recorded 16 points and Regan Schumacher had 10 rebounds.
South Dakota State: Paiton Burckhard scored 17 with eight rebounds. Tagyn Larson also had eight boards.
