WICHITA, Kan. - The Oral Roberts men's basketball team held an
eight point halftime lead over the No. 10 Wichita State Shockers
Saturday evening at Charles Koch Arena, but a hot-shooting second
half for WSU put the nationally-ranked squad past ORU 71-58.
It was the second top-15 team ORU (5-4) has faced this season,
also playing No. 12 Wisconsin on the road. Wichita State improved
to 9-0 after shooting 54 percent for the second half.
Shawn Glover led all scorers with 22 points, while Korey
Billbury added 12 points, including six from the free throw line.
D.J. Jackson added 10 points and tied Jorden Kaufman for a team
high five rebounds.
ORU shot well in the first half (13-27, 48 percent), but could
not sustain the effort, connecting on just 8-of-26 (30.8 percent)
in the second half.
It was the other way around for the Shockers who recovered from
a 22-percent effort (6-27) in the first half to hit 20-of-37 in the
second frame. Wichita State also held a 46-29 advantage on the
boards and 42-12 advantage in points in the paint.
Cleanthony Early led the Shockers with 16 points, while Chadrack
Lufile added 14. Darius Carter had 12 points and Tekele Cotton
chipped in 11.
"They showed why they are a top-10 team," said Coach Scott
Sutton. "I knew coming into the game that we would have to play a
great game and make shots in both halves, and we would need some
help from them. We got that in the first half and they didn't shoot
it very well but in the second half they played like a top-10
team."
After giving up the opening basket of the game, ORU got four
early points from Glover and a 3-pointer from Jabbar Singleton, to
take a 7-2 lead.
It wouldn't be until a 6-0 Shocker run that the home team would
retake the lead, using the spurt to go up 18-15 with seven minutes
to go in the half.
ORU answered right back with a 9-0 run and re-took the lead
24-18. In all, ORU closed the half on a 15-4 scoring run to take a
30-22 lead into the locker room after Glover hit a pair of free
throws with less than a second on the clock. It was the only two
free throw attempts for ORU in the half.
Wichita State quickly closed the gap using the 3-point shot.
After going 0-7 in the first half, the Shockers hit three of their
first four attempts in the second, opening up a 43-36 lead with 13
minutes to play.
ORU did what it could to hang in the game but couldn't catch a
break, and rebounding edge proved costly. With the shot clock
winding down, Glover blocked a pair of shots underneath but on the
third shocker attempt the ball fell through the hoop as the shot
clock buzzer sounded giving WSU a 49-37 lead.
In all, WSU out-scored ORU 42-16 to start the second half and
opened up its largest lead of the game, 64-46 with 4:46 to
play.
ORU did not quit and cut it down to a 10-point game, 68-58 with
a minute to play, but could not complete the comeback, falling
71-58.
ORU will take nearly a week off before returning to action on
Friday, December 13, as the Golden Eagles host Missouri State at 7
p.m. inside the Mabee Center.
