TULSA, Okla. - Despite outplaying a very good
Missouri State club most of the match, the Oral Roberts women's
soccer team falls to the Bears on a hot Sunday at home, 3-1.
The loss drops the Golden Eagles to 2-3-1 on the season.
ORU will have several days off to recover from a couple of
physical matches over the weekend as they head to Norman to face
Big 12 opponent Oklahoma. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
On Sunday, in 100-plus degree heat, both teams really struggled
to get much going in the first half of action. Unfortunately for
the Golden Eagles, they found themselves look up at the Bears after
the first 45 minutes, 1-0.
Missouri State tacked on a pair of goals early in the second
half as Rachel Weimer put a rebound in the net in the
54th minute and Michelle Sommer dribbled in for a shot
and goal a little over ten minutes later.
The Golden Eagles lone goal came in the 79th minute
on a free kick from Ashley
Martin. It was the second goal in as many games for Martin, and
just like her goal from Friday night against Northwestern State
(La.), Martin put the ball passed the diving opposing keeper into
the top right corner of the net.
After the match, head coach Ryan
Bush commented on the play of the freshman Martin.
"It's not just her goal scoring," said Bush. "Her tackling,
challenging, her ball winning on the back line, has been brilliant
up to this point."
Whitney
Booth had two opportunities to put the ball in goal for the
Golden Eagles, while Shelbi
Lousch, Lauren
Parks and Kayla
Keller added a shot on goal each.
Sophomore Helen
Erb was credited with her third loss in goal, picking up a save
in the match. Backup keeper Maddie Rhodes saw her second action of
the season, recording two saves in the final 45 minutes.
"I think we are going to be fine. The group is good and we will
bounce back from this," mentioned Bush. "I'm confident in our
ability to go compete with OU and some of the schools coming
up."
The Golden Eagles will not return to the pitch at the Case
Soccer Complex until Oct. 5 when they host a rematch with this past
Friday's opponent, Northwestern State, in a Southland Conference
tilt. ORU topped the Demons in the first matchup, 5-0.
