KANSAS CITY, Mo.-The Golden Eagles
(7-10-1, 4-2-1 Summit) will face Western Illinois (12-6-1, 5-2-0)
on Sunday at 1 p.m. in the Summit League Championship game for the
right to go to the NCAA College Cup.
ORU is coming off a spectacular last
second win against IPFW in the semifinals to earn a spot in their
second consecutive conference championship game. This is the second
meeting between the two teams in less than a week. The first match
came in the season finale, when ORU needed a win to qualify for the
conference tournament. ORU stunned the No.1 seeded Leathernecks
with a last minute goal by freshman Trevor
Laffoon, earning the No.3 seed and a chance to play IPFW in the
semifinals.
The Golden Eagles are led by All-Summit
First Team selection Aaron
Birk with seven goals and six assists. All-Freshman selection
Nick Petolick has 68 saves on the season.
Western Illinois defeated the defending
champions and No.4 seeded Oakland in the first round 1-0 on Friday.
They will play in their first championship game since 2009 when the
Leathernecks advanced to the College Cup. Western Illinois is led
by senior keeper Andy Ryan who has saved 86 shots and allowed just
0.87 goals per game.
The Golden Eagles were able to score
three second half goals against Ryan in their comeback win last
Sunday.
The Leathernecks are also led by junior
Nathan Bruinsma with five goals and two assists.
