Second Half Dooms ORU at Creighton, 87-65

OMAHA, Neb.—Leading 35-33 at halftime, Oral Roberts University couldn't hang on as Creighton rallied for an 87-65 win, Saturday at Qwest Center.

The Golden Eagles (1-2) allowed the Bluejays (3-0) to shoot 65.4 percent in the second half en route to the comeback victory. ORU had limited Creighton to 30 percent shooting in the first 20 minutes.

Creighton tied the game in the opening moments of the second half, and the game stayed back-and-forth over the next several possessions. After freshman Dominique Morrison (Kansas City, Mo.) converted a layup for a 39-37 lead with 18:37 remaining, the Bluejays took control. Creighton went on a 16-2 over the next 3:20, gaining a 53-41 lead on a Cavel Witter layup with 15:18 left.

The Bluejays extended the lead to as many as 21 over the next five minutes. ORU got as close as 15 points four times – the last time at 72-57 – before Creighton finished the game with 12-6 flurry for the final margin.

The first half showed promise for a young ORU team which often played three freshmen at one time. Trailing 14-6 early on ORU went on a 19-8 run, taking a 25-22 lead on a Kyron Stokes (Mansfield, Texas) three-pointer with 4:51 left before halftime. ORU maintained the lead until halftime.

Morrison led ORU with 20 points, making 8-of-14 shots from the field, and all three free throw attempts. Marcus Lewis (Long Beach, Calif.) scored 14 points with six rebounds and four assists, while Robert Jarvis (Humble, Texas) chipped in with 13 points.

Creighton's Cavel Witter led all scorers with 25 points, while Booker Woodfox had 12 and Casey Harriman 10.

Creighton finished the game shooting 46.4 percent for the game, including 47.1 percent from 3-point range. The Bluejays were also 27-of-33 from the free throw line, and owned a 39-29 rebounding advantage.

ORU shot 41.8 percent for the game, but was only 4-of-19 from three point range.

The Golden Eagles return to action when they visit Louisiana-Lafayette, 7 p.m., Tuesday.
